IMP Diagnostics shares an opinion article published in the prestigious The Pathologist, to which our laboratory contributed, entitled “AI in Pathology Fails Without Pathologists.”
This text addresses the fundamental role of pathologists in the development and implementation of digital pathology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions, highlighting why human clinical expertise is indispensable for creating tools that truly add value to the diagnostic process.
In the article, our Head of the R&D Unit, Diana Montezuma Felizardo — also a pathologist — emphasizes that:
- The expertise of pathologists is essential at every stage of developing algorithms and computational tools, ensuring they are truly relevant and aligned with clinical practice.
- Continuous collaboration between pathologists and development teams is key to avoiding tools that create more problems than solutions within the clinical workflow.
- Pathology is not an exact science, and diagnostic variability and clinical subjectivity require AI systems to be built on a solid clinical foundation.
- Beyond simple support tasks, the areas with the greatest potential are those where AI helps extract quantitative information and biomarkers that improve diagnostic consistency and accuracy.
- Even with technological advances, the role of supervision and final responsibility must remain in the hands of pathologists, as they hold the necessary clinical and ethical judgment.
