On September 5th, we marked the 122nd anniversary of the death of Dr. Rudolf Virchow, a German physician, anthropologist, pathologist, prehistorian, biologist, writer, editor, and politician.
German pathologist, known as the father of Modern Pathology, Virchow is widely regarded as the father of Modern Pathology and Social Medicine, as well as a central figure in Biology, particularly in Cell Theory. He is the author of the famous aphorism: “Medicine is a social science, and politics is nothing else but medicine on a large scale.” Virchow produced more than 2,000 scientific works, with the 1858 “Cellular Pathology” being one of his most notable contributions.
Did you know that the largest dataset for Computational Pathology was named in honor of Virchow? That’s right—an exhaustive effort by the Paige team demonstrated that this dataset could serve as the foundation for clinically graded models in oncologic pathology. It makes perfect sense that it was named after one of the greatest figures in science, health, and technology.
